The Use of Digital Learning Technologies - Week 3

The use of digital learning technologies in the field of education at every single level has set of benefits for both, teachers and student. The latest severe progression in the arena of technology has sprouted numerous gears and skills to incorporate in knowledge environment.

The requisite to be technical savvy for teacher and student is not the core criteria with the recent development of user friendly technologies. The best example is the vast features extended by Smart TV and popularity of tablets taking share of desktop and laptop.

At school level, the use of interactive smart board has given extensive freedom to teacher and student to explore without the time consuming process of writing everything on board every time. The same material once used can be used much time by various teachers and could be updated to the requirement, without the process of re-writing it.

The student can re-use the material as and when they wish to and can practice to perfection. The vast availability of software’s to expand further the impact of true digital learning has become a matter of necessity.

For instance ‘Zoho Projects”’ is a project management tool that defines the task, milestones, status report (including Gantt Chart) time tracking and file sharing. Tasks and subtasks can be structured in nested form, with duration, start date, due date, and task owner easily defined. Task owners can even be notified by e-mail of a task assignment (by the project manager). Amongst other features, team meetings can also be scheduled.

For students, may be a bit extreme for the average student, but seniors or grad students working on large, multi-stage projects with or without other students can use Zoho Projects to manage the workload.

Similarly, teachers can manage large research projects involving colleagues and/or students.
The use of tablets at different platform is gradually taking place of much of paper work submitted for evaluation by student, so to the drastic reduction in time for teacher to access, as most of the answer are assessed immediately on submission.

Another great advantage of technology is ‘Live Rerecording” of audio and video in class is to offer many additional features to people involved directly or indirectly.

To teacher, the repetitive video watching facilitate further to understand each student requirement much in detail, without relying heavily on self-memory. Even the repetitive video watching gives a platform to raise self-standard further.

The student can explore weak area where they require more concentration and the management involve in development and exploration of education standards, can virtually work out which area needs further training and additional working for teachers and the best performer do not have to wait for growth.

Adoption of Technology & Its Impect - Week 3

The change never happens overnight in the field of education, it took its own pace to evolve.

The current sources of knowledge are schools, polytechnics, universities and Private Organisations. They are part of a structured system, established and evolved since the existence of civilised human race.

The current stage is also a modernised version of study system to ancient one, where the change were through different phases happening over period of time. But, yes, had their impact during and after the happening of the change, so will this change.

"Technology provides us an opportunity to tackle chronic education challenges in new ways thanks to increasing use and access, constant innovation, and falling costs.  Technology can be a tool to drive equity and to help transform how education is delivered, making learning more student-centred and recognizing teachers as education designers,"

As yet the technology is carving in to the old system of education, the need and impact for the established sources of knowledge, will to keep it running and offering

A perfect blend of personal as well as technology’s use at school level, as at school level the teachers a quite a role model  for many aspects a technology can not cover.

  • Lead the process of articulating what learners will need to know and be able to do in a dynamic world where employability is key
  • Help prepare and train teachers to effectively facilitate instruction in the ever-evolving landscape of education
  • Help develop interoperability across programs, services, data-scapes, and learning platforms
  • Support the development of public-private partnerships and harness social innovations that can expand the array of resources, organizational formats for “school,” and opportunities available to all students
  • Ensure that everyone in the learning ecosystem has access to, and the capacity to use, the data needed to make effective decisions about learners
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across the learning ecosystem to identify ways of evaluating the quality of diverse learning agents and learning providers

At polytechnic and university level, the much focused approach and assuring stability, like 24 x 7 availability of Moodle. The design and instruction part of knowledge does demand for a research, based on how the student perceives the progression of knowledge evolving process and offering a very student friendly system. This will reduce chances of confusion at student end.

For the private organisation, offering knowledge with the help of technology, will be well organised, time and money saving, but surly very result oriented one. As the requirement for the knowledge is well define and the level of the recipient is well known, the delivery of knowledge with the help of technology will be much effective.

Challenge for ubiquitous and individualised Digital Learning Technology

The only constant phenomena on this earth is ‘Change’ and change means reaction, reformation, evolving, upraising, moving and all those adjective which refers to change. The change has to be painful, drastic and of course beautiful – so as the butterfly.

The change from traditional to modern digitalised learning will also have to pass through all the characteristics of ‘Change’.  The question is are we well prepared for the happening  as a midwife for the new baby or will it all be left to nature as for the butterfly.

The High cost of latest technology and the short life span it has, is the core ubiquitous challenge the Digital Learning Environment is facing. This challenge will be more and more critical for education provider and for student.

Managing changes of rapid technical advancement at education provider maybe easy to adopt, but for student, will be tough enough in such a downturn of economy,

Finding right technology fitting individual learning requirement is also critical as to getting a clear picture from an individual for the effectiveness of the course. The effectiveness of course does have relevance with the media or platform it is delivered on.

Above this, the challenge Digital Learning System, has raised to the sanctuaries old strong orthodox and well established education system, is will they change?

How the business and economic scenario will react and will the reaction be positive and constructive?

On the one hand, the opportunities are endless, through innovative technology; education can be ubiquitous, adaptable, approachable, improved, and economical. On the other hand, we have to deal with tough technologies, market severity  closed minds, apprehensive school districts, missing infrastructure, a shrinking tax base and politics.

At the end, the change we're going over at the present, will eventually going to be the most significant in the history of learning.

An instance where Digital Learning Technology was true life incidence

http://www.davebean.com/images/
Inclination toward technology and its use in day to day life was too natural since the Lotus book was in use.

Recently during the first semester of Graduate Diploma in Information Technology, one of the programming subjects was giving me a real hard time.

The basic understanding was clear to me but the form in which it was happening, was getting too tough. The subject was at the level seven, so the interaction was limited and expectancy was more from student.
The detail search on Google did provided good literature, but the search for practical was not getting fulfilled.

Finally the second most search place on www.youtube.com came to rescue and I found detail video on the subject, which saved me.

It is a very memorable instance.

Four pedagogy’s of Anderson and our life.

The knowledge we have might fill few books, but the knowledge we don’t have may fill few libraries. I don’t know who said it, but I remember as once my father told me. The important thing he told me was the statement came just after that.

He said that, till the last breath of our life, we are student and the best way to learn is accept the fact or truth that every creature on this earth has something to offer as knowledge. It is up to us how and when we find that truth – knowledge.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitruvian_Man
The four pedagogy – (paidos - child and ago – lead, means leading a child, in Greek language) of Anderson have very distinct notions of ‘Truth’ – its nature, where it resides and how it might be expressed.

In one of the ‘New ‘Classical (neo-Aristotelian Pedagogy), the knowledge or truth is conceived, without scrutinizing the missing premise on which the argument is based.

He must be socialist, because he favours Graduated Income Tax. And many more of such statement people make where the conclusion is without scrutinizing the missing premises.

‘It is from Cadbury, it got to be good’ my son says quite often whenever he wants a chocolate from Cadbury. A very classic example or arriving to strong conclusion – establishing truth.

With the modes of Discourse Pedagogy, the writer becomes more a detective and supports the truth with various facts and findings to the truth.

Usually the lecturer or teacher will recognize the methods of arrangement: narration, description, exposition, and argumentation. Every style might be additionally categorised into sub-modes; for case, discussion might comprise relate and divergence, or reason and outcome.

‘The acid will burn.’ The statement heard in 5th form a science teacher was so sharply carved in mind, that even the most diluted and medically purified one was scary at first instance in medical lab.

With Process (neo-Platonic) Pedagogy the fact or reality is considered as ideal rather than material. The truth exists in human psyche. The presenter consequently pursues truth through self-examination.

The process approach to teaching writing makes use of free-writing and pre-writing drills so that the essayist can compose the way in the direction of the truth that he or she is chasing (but can never moderately prompt).

Actually, language is challenging in process pedagogy as it fit in to the material territory and so cannot sufficiently characterize the idyllic.

As an alternative of objective, representational language, the process approach emphasizes the importance of the individual voice. Voice personalizes the exploration of an idea, privileging individual perception over any objective truth.

The process approach has its paybacks. Paramount, it roots the proprietorship of writing exactly where it belongs: with the student. Next, it explains students to reflect further intensely around a topic as they move through the various pre-writing, writing, and revision processes.

Nothing like the aforementioned three methodologies to teaching composition, the epistemic approach debates that truth does not exist apart from language. Relatively, truth is made by language. The action of text writing is a truth-producing (or, if you like, a meaning-making) process.

Based on an educational model, which assumes that the learning process is an interactive process of seeking understanding, consisting of three fundamental components:

The e learning and pedagogy.

Conceptualization, Construction and Dialogue, the Pedagogy is motivated on enabling learning and intellectual growth of students in contrast to instruction that treats students as the object of curriculum implementation.

http://img.scoop.it/
Effective learning pedagogy necessitates teachers to realise how students learn and must have the aptitude and independence to design, implement and assess educational activities that meet the needs of individual and all students.

E-learning pedagogy is one that not only integrates learning pedagogy, but goes further than it to take account of a profounder study into the fusion of instructional strategies that take into account of real-time personalized learning content-to-learner adaptability.

It is vital to note that the projected e-learning pedagogy should not anticipate signifying the full range of multifaceted jobs that include teaching; relatively, it must signify instructional events that promote lively student learning in the context of e-learning.

It will emphasis on the misuse of information technologies to acclimatize to the fluctuating learning circumstances and diverse student requirements.

Meaning of VAKOG & NLP and there relation.

VAKOG - visual, auditory, kinaesthetic, olfactory and gustatory, the different senses, with which human can grasp information known as representation systems, or sensory modalities.

In simple way the senses are used by human body to grasp information and act upon. The act based on the information sensed does differ as out of all the different senses which one is dominating.

The dominance of the senses is very closely related to the circumstances a person is in to and the mood at that stage.

A testiest pizza offered to same person with same hunger, but in different mood will raise different review of same pizza.

The same happens to the knowledge offered.  The NLP - Neuro-linguistic programming The word asserts a connection between the neurological processes ("neuro"), language
("linguistic"), and behavioral patterns learned through experience ("programming") that proponents speculate can be changed to achieve specific goals in life.

http://www.inspiration.com/
People have very different ways of describing their world. From noticing the eye patterns and checking that people have varying ways of internalising information, we can begin to know that everybody has their own personal way of experiencing their world.

NLP asserts that for most circumstances and most people, four of the five sensory based modes seem to dominate in mental processing:

  • Visual thoughts – sight, mental imagery, spatial awareness
  • Auditory (or linguistic) – sound, speech, dialog, white noise
  • Kinaesthetic (or feelings) sense – somatic feelings in the body, temperature, pressure, and also emotion.
  • Self-talk (or audio internal)

The other two senses,
  • Gustatory (taste) and
  • Olfactory (smell),
http://media.salemwebnetwork.com/

are closely associated, often seem to be less significant in general mental processing, and are often considered jointly as one (possibly linked with feelings).

This combine knowledge of NLP – Neuro Linguistic Programming and VAKOG – Visual, Auditory, kinaesthetic, Olfactory and Gustatory sensing capability of information becomes crucial in developing and framing educational material and choosing the media to be used.

Individualised and Ubiquitous Learning

The miniaturisation of family, the world’s conversion in to globalised village, availability of ample knowledge and the resources to share it with steep curve of changing technology has even change the leaving style.

The way of working, the structure of family and in turn society has even change due to the bombardment of technology in almost all area.

These changes in human life and world economic and social pattern had given tremendous boost to Individualised and Ubiquitous Learning market.

The current trend of business is ‘possible to produce a product anywhere, using resources from anywhere, by a company located anywhere to sell anywhere’, John Naisbiti (1994).

The wave of globalisation has been supported by strong rise of e business and new value to the boundary less business.

http://www.oberholtzer-creative.com
The odd hours of working, distances to travel for work, usefulness of knowledge at all part of world are the few core reasons for the demand of Individualised Learning. Personalized learning is defined as adjusting the pace (individualization), adjusting the approach (differentiation), and connecting to the learners interests and experiences.

The mobility for work and from work to home, the odd hours to work, the miniaturisation of computer to different form like note pad, tablet and fastest changing mobile technology offering Smart phones, has become most unavoidable (many a time a nuisance) to live without.

The endless features offered from smart phones and ease of use has made them second ‘Sweet Heart’.  These characteristics of Smart Phone devices has emerged an additional platform to bombard knowledge called Ubiquitous Learning. A ubiquitous learning environment is any setting in which students can become totally immersed in the learning process.

Something like Ubiquitous computing. Ubiquitous computing (ubicomp) is a post-desktop model of human-computer interaction in which information processing has been thoroughly integrated into everyday objects and activities.

Digital Learning Technology and me.

http://fellowblog.rootsandshoots.org/attention-educators-happy-digital-learning-day
Quite excited, for everything...first day of new  and last semester for Grad.Dip - Information Technology, meeting new people and on top of it, will learn something new and upcoming.

Started early and got in to first class of never resting and ever evolving subject - Digital Learning.

A nice first hour of over all understanding of subject and knowledge on where the human race is heading to fulfill there thirst of knowledge or training or evolving or exploration.

An hour was well and very briefly consume by Michael with his two decades of knowledge and understanding of subject.

It will be a great time of journey in this class for me...yes it will.

I am Raj Jadeja, and known as Raj. I enrolled to Graduate Diploma - Information Technology last year - second semester. This enrollment was lead by my inclination towards the fastest developing era of technology and the user friendliness it has offered in vast area of commercial as well as personal aspects.

The interacting way of 'Blog' and 'Micro Blog' sprouted a conscious thinking on how to present and what to present, considering the seriousness of privacy.

The beginning of the class was so well address with the subject of privacy, that it has spark few spots on how to present, that ones' professionalism is fully projected to the subject without any risk of exposing personal aspects.

The concern of privacy over immense potential of Digital Learning Technology is and will surly demand for a focus and may be a new study area to evolve.
A brief speech on Internet Use Raises Privacy Concerns details' a great concern of our day to day use of internet and the consequences it may have, knowingly or unknowingly. www.voanews.com/audio/audio/42837.html

Any way it is all about people and there facility, connivance with dignity to consider.
